Transport Minister Kamel el-Wazir inspected ongoing projects at Alexandria and Dekheila ports as part of the plan to establish the Greater Alexandria Port, in line with the President’s directives to transform Egypt into a regional hub for transport, logistics, and transit trade, and to follow up on the implementation of the Sokhna–Dekheila integrated logistics corridor.
At the beginning of his extensive tour in Alexandria to inspect a number of development and service projects, Transport Minister Wazir chaired the Ordinary General Assembly meeting of Egypt Marine Ports Company, in the presence of Osama Rabie, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, Nehad Shaheen, Deputy Minister of Transport for Maritime Transport, as well as heads of contributing entities and board members.
The General Assembly proceedings included, according to the Ministry of Transport, the company’s operational performance during 2025 was reviewed, with indicators showing that the terminal received 463 vessels, handling a total throughput exceeding 800,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), marking a 41% growth compared to the previous year.
These results contributed to strengthening Alexandria Port’s position as a key transshipment hub in the Eastern Mediterranean, with transit cargo accounting for around 40% of total handling volumes. The meeting also reviewed the latest developments in the implementation of the Rail Container Shuttle (RCS) station project, which falls within the Ministry of Transport’s strategy to establish integrated development logistics corridors linking seaports with dry and inland ports via the railway network.
This aims to support the state’s efforts to consolidate Egypt’s position as a regional hub for transport, logistics, and transit trade, maximize cargo throughput, and enhance the movement of goods through the rail network. The company’s chairman noted that during the terminal’s trial operation phase, 169 train trips were received, handling a total of 13,592 TEUs, reflecting the efficiency of the operational system and the readiness of the multimodal transport infrastructure.
By the end of the meeting, the Transport Minister conducted a field visit to the “Tahya Misr” terminal, where he inspected the quays, which were receiving six vessels at the time of the visit, and reviewed the flow of container and general cargo handling operations.
The Minister then proceeded to inspect the “Tahya Misr 2” multipurpose terminal project at Berth 100 in Dekheila Port, which aims to increase the port’s handling and storage capacity. The project includes quays with a total length of 1,680 meters and a depth of up to 18 meters, along with a land area of 1,263,000 square meters.
Procedures are currently being finalized to award the concession for the construction, development, use, operation, maintenance, and re-delivery of the superstructure of a Ro-Ro and general cargo terminal at Berth 100 to the EDECS consortium. The project includes a 480-meter quay and a 423,000-square-meter back area.
The project represents an important addition to the Alexandria Port Authority, as it will introduce a new Ro-Ro berth at Dekheila Port, strengthening the Ro-Ro system and its connected supply chains, which are currently centered at Alexandria Port and include four operational Ro-Ro berths with a total length of 807 meters.
