Minister of Planning and Economic Development Ahmed Rostom met with Japanese Ambassador to Egypt Iwai Fumio on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, to discuss bilateral cooperation, Egypt's economic reform program, and opportunities to further expand the strategic partnership between the two countries.
Rostom described Egypt's cooperation with Japan as a model partnership built on mutual respect and the exchange of expertise, affirming the government's commitment to broadening economic ties and advancing joint development initiatives that serve the interests of both countries.
He said Egypt's economic and social development plan for fiscal year 2026/27 prioritizes improving the efficiency of public spending by directing investments toward priority sectors to maximize their developmental impact while maintaining macroeconomic stability and supporting sustainable, inclusive growth.
The minister stressed that human development remains a government priority, highlighting the presidential Decent Life initiative as one of Egypt's largest integrated rural development programs aimed at improving infrastructure and public services. Rostom also reviewed the government's ongoing economic and structural reform agenda to strengthen macroeconomic stability, improve the business environment, enhance the competitiveness of the Egyptian economy, and empower the private sector as a key driver of sustainable growth.
He praised the strong cooperation between Egypt and Japan, noting that it has led to the implementation of several major development projects across key sectors, reflecting the depth of bilateral relations and both countries' commitment to expanding them. For his part, Ambassador Fumio expressed appreciation for the growing partnership between Egypt and Japan, emphasizing the importance of drawing on international best practices while adapting them to national development priorities.
He reaffirmed Japan's commitment to continuing cooperation and exchanging expertise in areas of mutual interest to support Egypt's development efforts.
