Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi met with Cypriot Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry Michael Damianos on the sidelines of the roundtable meeting of the East Mediterranean Gas Forum in Greece to discuss developments in bilateral cooperation in the natural gas sector and ongoing efforts to accelerate the utilization of Cypriot gas resources through Egypt’s integrated infrastructure, within the framework of the strategic partnership between the two countries.
The Ministry of Petroleum said in a statement on Wednesday October 7,2026 that the minister of petroleum affirmed Egypt’s commitment to pressing ahead with advancing cooperation with Cyprus and transforming discovered gas resources into productive and commercial projects, while leveraging Egypt’s competitive advantages, including its integrated infrastructure for receiving, transporting, processing and liquefying natural gas.The two sides stressed the importance of maintaining close coordination within the framework of the East Mediterranean Gas Forum, as a regional platform supporting cooperation in the natural gas sector, promoting investment, developing infrastructure and connecting gas resources to markets.
The meeting addressed developments at Cyprus’s Cronos gas field, with both sides stressing the importance of expediting the completion of the necessary work and arrangements to connect gas produced from the field to Egypt’s infrastructure and make use of Egypt’s existing facilities, supporting implementation of the project according to the targeted timetable.The two-sides affirmed their commitment to continued coordination with the project partners to advance implementation, following the project’s transition to the execution phase after the final investment decision was taken by the Eni–TotalEnergies consortium.
Gas production from the field is targeted to begin in 2028. They also discussed developments at the Aphrodite gas field, stressing the importance of expediting the completion of the agreements and arrangements required for its development.The ministers further underscored the need for continued coordination among the relevant authorities in Egypt and Cyprus and the project partners to advance the completion of the commercial and regulatory frameworks required for gas supply, with the aim of making tangible progress toward a final investment decision and the launch of project implementation.
Regarding Cypriot discoveries being developed by ExxonMobil and QatarEnergy, the two sides stressed the importance of expediting the implementation of the memorandum of understanding signed between Egypt and the two-company consortium to study options for developing and marketing Cypriot gas and utilizing Egypt’s infrastructure to receive, liquefy and re-export it through Egypt.
They also emphasized the importance of intensifying the work of joint committees and establishing clear timelines for completing the technical, commercial and regulatory studies. All efforts would help transform existing understandings into executable projects, maximize the benefits of Cyprus’s gas discoveries and Egypt’s infrastructure and support greater integration of energy markets in the Eastern Mediterranean.
