Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam asserted on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, the ministry’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in the fields of scientific research, capacity building, and knowledge exchange, as well as linking research findings to water-policy development.The minister stressed the importance of translating this cooperation into practical programs in coordination with national institutions and UNESCO’s International Hydrological Program.The minister made the remarks during a meeting with Regional Director of the UNESCO Regional Bureau for the Arab States in Cairo Paul Coustère to discuss ways to strengthen joint cooperation and support national priorities in the sustainable management of water resources.During the meeting, the two sides reviewed proposed areas of cooperation to support the African Water and Climate Adaptation Center (PACWA) in building the capacities of African professionals, in addition to cooperation in the field of green water and promoting an integrated understanding of the water cycle, including rainfall and soil moisture.
They also discussed continuing the work of the UNESCO Chair on the Management and Governance of Transboundary Water Resources at the National Water Research Center, with the aim of making it a platform for applied research, expertise exchange, capacity building, and scientific dialogue.The two sides also reviewed ongoing cooperation within the framework of Cairo Water Week 2026, particularly sessions addressing water diplomacy, science-based cooperation, green water and capacity building.They discussed proposed cooperation to prepare a project under the Global Environment Facility aimed at enhancing water security and climate adaptation through the integrated management of coastal groundwater aquifers in Egypt.
