Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi said on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, the energy sector remains a cornerstone for achieving economic cooperation objectives among the Developing-8 (D-8) countries amid rapid global changes and growing challenges that require stronger coordination, knowledge exchange and optimal utilization of available resources among member states.
The minister made the remarks during his participation in the first meeting of D-8 energy ministers, held on the sidelines of Baku Energy Week in the Azerbaijani capital, with the participation of energy ministers from member countries. The meeting discussed ways to enhance joint cooperation in the fields of oil and natural gas, liquefied natural gas (LNG), electricity interconnection, renewable and new energy sources, infrastructure development and regional integration projects in the energy sector, in addition to encouraging joint investments that support energy security and mutual interests.
Badawi stressed that deeper integration and cooperation among D-8 countries open broad prospects for generating added value for their peoples, especially through expanding oil, gas and renewable energy projects, developing energy infrastructure and promoting joint investments that contribute to sustainable economic growth and stronger energy security.
He added that addressing current global challenges requires coordinated efforts and the adoption of shared visions and initiatives, especially in natural gas and new and renewable energy sectors, particularly green hydrogen, alongside supporting value-added industries to enhance comprehensive economic development across member states.
They also reviewed the preliminary presentation of the draft charter of the D-8 Energy and Climate Center, aimed at strengthening institutional cooperation among member states in energy and climate-related fields.
