Iran Demands End to Naval Blockade, Sanctions in Fresh US Deal Push

Iran has laid out new conditions for any future agreement with the United States, demanding the removal of the naval blockade and the lifting of sanctions as tensions between Tehran and Washington continue to simmer. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Qaribabadi outlined Tehran’s position during a briefing to the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, insisting that any breakthrough with Washington must come with major concessions from the US.

According to Iranian officials, Tehran wants an end to military operations across West Asia, the withdrawal of US forces from areas surrounding Iran, the lifting of the naval blockade and the release of frozen Iranian assets as part of any future deal. Qaribabadi revealed that Iran has already sent a fresh proposal to Washington through Pakistan, although Tehran says it has yet to receive an official response from the Americans.

The senior diplomat also claimed that it was the United States that sought both a ceasefire and renewed negotiations after the latest round of fighting. Members of the parliamentary commission urged Iran’s negotiators to hold firm to what they described as the country’s “victorious position”, warning against trusting Washington in light of the US withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear agreement.

Lawmakers further stressed the importance of maintaining Iran’s role in overseeing the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. The latest crisis erupted in late February following clashes involving Iran, the United States and Israel. Tehran responded with Operation True Promise 4, unleashing missile and drone strikes on US military bases across West Asia and Israeli targets.

A Pakistan-brokered ceasefire eventually brought the 40-day conflict to a halt, but subsequent talks between Tehran and Washington failed to secure a lasting agreement. Despite the truce, tensions remain dangerously high, with Washington continuing to reference restrictions on Iranian ports — measures Tehran insists are illegal under international law.
