Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation announced that Egypt will host the 33rd meeting of the Joint Permanent Committee of the Mediterranean Animal Health Network (REMESA), scheduled to take place in December. The event comes as part of Egypt’s growing regional role in animal health and efforts to strengthen food security.
The meeting will bring together senior veterinary officials and representatives of international and regional organizations concerned with animal health from countries across the Mediterranean basin, with direct support from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH).
The official selection of Cairo to host the upcoming session was approved during the network’s 32nd meeting, held in Cyprus last June. The decision reflects the leading role Egypt has played in recent years in supporting regional veterinary cooperation particularly in combating transboundary animal diseases and strengthening surveillance and early-warning systems.
The hosting also reflects growing international and regional confidence in the technical and institutional capabilities of Egypt’s General Organization for Veterinary Services (GOVS). It highlights Egypt’s successful experience in controlling and containing an outbreak of SAT1 foot-and-mouth disease in 2025 through early detection, rapid response and intensive vaccination programs.
Agriculture and Land Reclamation Minister Alaa Farouk said hosting the high-level regional event underscores Egypt’s pivotal and leading position in agricultural and veterinary affairs at both the regional and international levels. He noted that the political leadership attaches the highest priority to livestock and food security.
The minister explained that holding the REMESA meeting in Cairo represents a strategic opportunity to consolidate Egypt’s role as a regional center of excellence and coordination in animal health. It also opens new avenues for attracting international partnerships and initiatives aimed at developing veterinary systems and boosting investment in the livestock sector.
