Türkiye’s state-owned energy company BOTAS has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Italy’s Edison to explore potential cooperation in natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG), according to Reuters citing a company statement on Sunday, May 24, 2026.

Under the agreement, both parties will assess opportunities for natural gas and LNG supply, in addition to evaluating joint commercial prospects. The MoU also includes plans to establish a joint working group to examine the technical, commercial, and regulatory aspects of a potential hydrogen-compatible natural gas interconnector between Turkey and Italy.

BOTAS noted that the envisioned strategic partnership with Edison is expected to contribute to strengthening energy connectivity within the Mediterranean basin, while enhancing regional energy supply security and supporting the development of both countries’ energy sectors.

Both companies have independently maintained active roles in the Mediterranean gas market. BOTAS has been engaged in expanding its natural gas import infrastructure and diversifying supply sources, including LNG, while Edison has a long-standing presence in gas trading, LNG procurement, and cross-border infrastructure projects across Europe and the Mediterranean.

Turkey and Italy cooperate in energy mainly through natural gas trade, with Turkey serving as a key transit route to Italy via pipelines like TAP. Both countries are also aligned on LNG supply diversification to enhance energy security.
