The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) Aviation Chapter has unveiled plans to launch a N500 million endowment fund as it commemorates its first anniversary, positioning the fund as a cornerstone for sustainable financial governance and capacity building across Nigeria's aviation ecosystem.

The initiative was announced by pioneer chairman Ayodele Olatiregun, who described the chapter's inaugural year as both demanding and fulfilling. The endowment fund is designed to provide perpetual funding for chapter operations, infrastructure development, and professional advancement programmes that serve aviation finance professionals across public and private institutions.

Structure and Purpose of the Endowment

According to the statement issued to The PUNCH, portions of the N500m fund will be invested to generate returns that sustain ongoing activities, while other allocations will finance physical infrastructure including a permanent secretariat and a dedicated knowledge centre. The knowledge centre will be equipped with both digital and physical learning resources to support training, research, and continuous professional development for aviation finance practitioners.

"The endowment fund represents a strategic initiative to ensure sustainability," Olatiregun stated. "It will not merely support our activities but also enable us to develop facilities for training, research, and professional development. We are building a knowledge centre that will serve both present and future aviation finance professionals."

Building a Chapter from the Ground Up

Formally inaugurated on April 22, 2025, the Aviation Chapter聚合 chartered accountants operating throughout Nigeria's aviation value chain. The membership base, which began with 137 professionals, has expanded steadily to include representatives from regulatory agencies, service providers, and private sector operators. Participating institutions span the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), alongside ground handling companies, airlines, and travel agencies.

This cross-sector composition has strengthened collaboration and knowledge sharing among finance professionals tasked with managing the financial complexities of Nigeria's aviation sector.

"The creation of the Aviation Chapter aligns with ICAN's evolving structure that enables professionals within specific industries to address sector-specific challenges," Olatiregun explained. "For aviation, we identified the need to build a platform that promotes excellence in financial management and improves accountability across the entire ecosystem."

Challenges and Community Outreach

As a not-for-profit body, the chapter encountered initial difficulties in mobilising funds and sustaining member engagement. Olatiregun acknowledged that funding constraints and volunteer participation presented significant hurdles during the formation period. Nevertheless, he credited the resilience and commitment of the membership for helping the organisation establish a solid operational foundation within its first twelve months.

Beyond internal capacity building, the chapter has committed to community engagement through outreach programmes aimed at introducing young people to career pathways in accounting and aviation finance. These initiatives also support the educational development and career aspirations of secondary school students.

Celebrations marking the anniversary will unfold over a week, commencing with a health walk and wellness session, followed by an inter-school debate that examines aviation's contribution to national development.
