The Kamsarmax dry-bulk carrier Wadi El Nile has set sail from China en route to Egypt, while the Wadi El Qamar ship is preparing to begin its voyage, the Ministry of Transport said on Saturday. The announcement came a day after Transport Minister Kamel el Wazir attended a ceremony marking the handover of the two new vessels to the National Navigation Company (NNC) from China’s New Hantong Shipyard.
The Ministry said the acquisition was part of Egypt’s efforts to support and modernize its national merchant fleet and strengthen its ability to compete in regional and international markets. The two giant dry-bulk carriers are identical Kamsarmax vessels, each with a deadweight capacity of 82,000 tons.
“Each ship is 229 meters long, 32.26 meters wide, and has a draft of 14.5 meters,” the ministry said. The vessels were designed and built using the latest global technologies to improve operational efficiency and fuel consumption, making them among the newest additions to Egypt’s merchant fleet, it added.
Each ship is equipped with a MAN B&W main engine producing 7,490 kilowatts and fitted with a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system to reduce emissions and comply with the latest international environmental requirements. The Ministry said both vessels are also equipped with Ballast Water Management Systems to help protect the marine environment and limit the transfer of marine organisms between different ecosystems.
“The ships comply with international environmental requirements and conventions,” the ministry added.
