West Africa Container Terminal (WACT)-APM Terminals Nigeria has awarded scholarships to 52 new beneficiaries, expanding its education support scheme to a total of 193 students. The latest beneficiaries include 47 students from the company’s host communities and five children of employees.
The awards were presented at a ceremony attended by WACT management, APM Terminals Nigeria executives, community leaders, parents and beneficiaries. WACT Managing Director, Courage Obadagbonyi, described the scholarship scheme as a long-term investment in the future of young people and their communities.
He said the initiative, now in its fifth year since the company’s community transformation programme was launched in 2021, has already produced several first-class graduates, with some now employed by the company. Congratulating the new scholars, Obadagbonyi urged them to remain committed to academic excellence and make the most of the opportunity.
He also highlighted complementary initiatives, including the WACT Internship Programme, which provides workplace experience for scholars, and the EngineerHER Programme, a one-year development scheme designed to equip female graduates with practical skills and industry exposure.
APM Terminals Nigeria CEO, Frederik Klinke, described the scholarship programme as one of the company’s most impactful social sustainability initiatives, saying investment in education is critical to developing the skilled workforce needed to drive economic growth.
He added that WACT’s longstanding partnership with its host communities has strengthened its commitment to creating opportunities for young people while supporting national development. Community leaders commended WACT for sustaining the scholarship scheme and its broader investment in education and youth development.
They urged beneficiaries to make the most of the opportunity and serve as worthy ambassadors of their communities. Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mbombom Lawrence Obariayime thanked WACT for empowering students from the Onne and Ogu communities through education, describing the scholarships as a life-changing opportunity.
