Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly asserted that the gradual shift toward electric vehicles represents a cornerstone in building a modern and sustainable transport system aimed at balancing economic growth with environmental protection, while enhancing the efficient use of the state’s energy resources.
This came during his meeting on Sunday, May 10, 2026, with Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk to follow up on government procedures for transitioning to electric vehicles and the ministry’s efforts to support this file, as part of implementing the state’s strategic vision to maximize resource efficiency and reduce fuel consumption.
Cabinet Spokesman Mohamed el Homosany said the finance minister reviewed the government’s strategic objectives to accelerate the shift to electric vehicles, primarily aiming to rationalize public spending and support the transition to clean energy, thereby reducing the import bill for petroleum products.
He explained that the plan includes improving the efficiency of the government vehicle fleet so that the state administrative apparatus becomes a model for implementing the green transport strategy, given the significant role of government transport in achieving national targets in this area.
The meeting also reviewed a strategic vision for developing the infrastructure and digital systems needed to support the expansion of electric vehicles in Egypt. The proposals aim to ensure operational efficiency through two main pillars including expanding smart and fast-charging stations and classifying vehicles according to usage needs and strengthening cybersecurity systems while adhering to international safety standards, as part of efforts to transition to sustainable transport and reduce carbon emissions.
Kouchouk also presented a comparative study showing the expected savings from switching from conventional vehicles to electric vehicles, confirming substantial financial benefits. At the end of the meeting, Madbouly directed regular follow-up with relevant ministries and authorities to accelerate the government’s transition to electric vehicles and overcome any obstacles, ensuring the achievement of state goals in rationalizing spending and improving energy efficiency.
He also instructed officials at the Ministry of Finance to begin negotiations with electric vehicle dealers to secure the best offers, in preparation for contracting the first batch of vehicles for government officials as replacements for fuel-powered cars.
