Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly affirmed that President Abdel Fattah El Sisi attaches great importance to the issue of seawater desalination, noting that the state is currently expanding such projects and working to localize various industries related to seawater desalination in a way that contributes to achieving the state's objectives in this vital sector.
The remarks came during a meeting held by Madbouly on Monday, October 5, 2026, at the government headquarters in the New Capital with officials from “Acwa” to follow up on the latest developments in cooperation on seawater desalination projects. The meeting was attended by Samir Sarhan, Executive Director of Acwa; Hashem Ghabashi, Acwa's Regional President for the Middle East, Africa and Southeast Asia; Ahmed Omran, Deputy Minister of Housing for Utilities; Hassan Amin, Acwa's CEO and Regional Managing Director in Egypt; and Assem Shokr, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Holding Company for Water and Wastewater.
The Prime Minister welcomed the Acwa's officials, stressing the ongoing cooperation with the company in implementing seawater desalination projects, in light of the company's extensive experience in this vital sector. “The current objective within which we are working is to secure the best offers from the companies bidding to begin implementing these projects,” the Prime Minister said.
“We are targeting desalinated water production of 10 million cubic meters per day. We are also working to expand the implementation of desalination projects through modern plants built using the latest technologies available globally and in cooperation with major specialized companies,” he added.
The executive director of Acwa, meanwhile, expressed the company's readiness to deepen cooperation with Egypt, saying that Acwa has substantial investments in Egypt in renewable energy projects and reviewing a number of these projects. Sarhan also highlighted the ongoing cooperation between Acwa and Egypt to implement a number of seawater desalination projects aimed at enhancing Egypt's production capacity in this field, particularly given that Egypt is a trusted partner for Acwa.
During the meeting, the importance of desalination projects was underscored as part of the state's efforts to promote sustainable urban development, expand the establishment of new cities, and develop coastal areas. Such projects represent one of the sustainable solutions for providing the water resources needed to achieve development objectives.
The meeting also discussed the promising investment opportunities offered by this sector, in light of the Egyptian state's drive to enhance private-sector participation and benefit from its expertise in desalination projects, while supporting the localization of industries associated with the sector.
