Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawi inspected the Damietta liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant on Friday to review its operational readiness as Egypt seeks to maximize the value of its LNG infrastructure and reinforce its position as a regional energy trading hub.
Badawi said the Damietta and Idku LNG facilities, the only two gas liquefaction plants in the eastern Mediterranean, are strategic assets that support the state’s energy strategy and economic competitiveness. He added that Egypt's integrated LNG infrastructure strengthens its ability to attract investment and expand regional partnerships, citing cooperation with Cyprus to process and re-export gas from Cypriot offshore fields through Egyptian facilities.
The minister also toured the Energos Winter floating regasification unit at Damietta Port, where he reviewed operations. The vessel is one of four regasification ships currently operating in Egypt to receive imported LNG, convert it back into natural gas and feed it into the national grid to help meet domestic demand.
