Nigerian Ports Authority Managing Director Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho announced at the United Nations General Assembly that the NPA is working to build a globally competitive port system aimed at trade facilitation, foreign direct investment attraction, and investor confidence.
A digitally modernized port system could reduce cargo dwell times, improve customs clearance efficiency, and lower logistics costs for importers and exporters. If realized, the competitive positioning may shift some regional transshipment traffic away from neighboring West African hubs. Procurement timelines for port handling equipment and automation systems could extend as new standards are defined. Freight forwarders and shipping lines may face adjustment periods during infrastructure upgrades.
