The Nigerian Navy has announced a distinctive public engagement initiative, unveiling an online raffle that will allow selected civilians to experience life aboard its warships during commemorations of its 70th anniversary. The announcement, made by Director of Information Abi Folorunsho on Wednesday, opens a two-week registration period during which members of the public can submit their entries before a randomized selection process determines the successful applicants.
Folorunsho took to social media platform X to formally publicize the initiative, posting: "I promised to post the link for a chance to sail on a Nigerian Navy warship. The day is here." According to the Director, once the registration window closes, all entries will be compiled and assigned unique identification codes, which will then serve as the basis for a transparent draw mechanism.
"Once all entries are collated, I will randomly select people to pick a code or codes," Folorunsho explained, emphasizing that the selection process has been designed to ensure fairness and impartiality. However, he was clear that safety protocols would ultimately constrain the number of participants admitted, stating that the total tally of winners would depend directly on how many individuals could safely join a given vessel without endangering operations or compromising maritime safety standards.
Each successful applicant will be assigned a berth corresponding to their unique code, and Folorunsho underscored that these allocations are non-transferable. Prospective participants have raised questions regarding data privacy, prompting the Director to direct applicants toward the privacy policy published alongside the registration portal, which he confirmed addresses data protection requirements comprehensively.
The raffle remains open to all eligible candidates, though applicants must make their own travel arrangements to reach the departure point in Lagos. The registration form, officially titled "Nigerian Navy @70 Anniversary," collects basic personal details including full name, contact information, country of residence, and age group. Participation is restricted to individuals who have reached the age of majority, with the threshold set at 18 years old. The form additionally includes a consent section authorizing data use and an optional field for those wishing to receive future communications about Navy activities.
