Nigeria and the Netherlands have forged a landmark customs partnership aimed at tightening border security, accelerating legitimate trade and intensifying the fight against smugglers, drug traffickers and other transnational criminal networks. The Joint Declaration, signed in Brussels on Wednesday, marks a significant step in efforts by both countries to combat the growing threat of illicit cross-border trade, including narcotics, counterfeit goods, wildlife trafficking and arms smuggling.
The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Dr. Adewale Adeniyi, and the Director-General of Netherlands Customs, Nanette van Schelven, formalised the agreement, which officials described as a milestone in bilateral customs cooperation. The pact commits both administrations to closer intelligence sharing, stronger enforcement, faster cargo clearance and enhanced capacity building to counter increasingly sophisticated criminal networks exploiting global trade routes.
Speaking after the signing, Adeniyi said the agreement highlighted the importance of international cooperation in tackling modern border management and trade challenges. He said the partnership would strengthen intelligence exchange, enhance enforcement operations, expand capacity-building initiatives and reinforce efforts to secure international supply chains while ensuring the smooth flow of legitimate trade.
Van Schelven said Nigeria and the Netherlands face similar customs and border security challenges in an increasingly interconnected trading environment, adding that closer collaboration would improve operational efficiency and strengthen the fight against organised crime.
The agreement follows months of high-level engagement between the two customs authorities, including a working visit by Nigeria Customs to the Netherlands in October 2025 and a reciprocal visit by Dutch customs officials to Nigeria in March 2026. Both sides also reaffirmed Nigeria’s strategic position as one of West Africa’s largest economies and a key trading partner of the Netherlands, stressing that stronger customs cooperation would be crucial to safeguarding trade and reinforcing border controls.
The declaration paves the way for a joint work plan covering training, knowledge exchange, risk management, supply chain security and other coordinated initiatives designed to enhance border efficiency while promoting secure and fair international trade.
