The Nigerian Navy has rescued three passengers after a boat capsized on the Bennett River in Warri, Delta State, averting a potential tragedy. The Navy said on Monday that personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) DELTA carried out the rescue during a routine maritime security patrol on the inland waterway.
The patrol team reportedly spotted distressed passengers and debris from the overturned boat, prompting an immediate search-and-rescue operation. All three victims were successfully recovered, while valuable items were also salvaged from the wreckage. Preliminary findings indicated that the boat capsized after encountering rough waves and severe weather caused by a heavy rainstorm.
The rescued passengers were evacuated to the NNS DELTA Sick Bay, where they received medical treatment before being discharged after their condition was stabilised. The Navy said the incident underscored its role in safeguarding lives and responding swiftly to emergencies on the nation’s waterways.
It reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a safe and secure maritime environment and supporting lawful activities across Nigeria’s coastal and inland communities.
