Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has smashed through a historic milestone, becoming the first container line in the world to operate a fleet of more than 1,000 vessels, according to industry analyst Alphaliner. The Geneva-based giant reached the landmark with the chartering of the 868 TEU Admiral Neptune, pushing its vast fleet into four figures.

In sheer scale, MSC now commands a staggering capacity of 7.32 million TEU — outpacing its closest rival, Maersk, by roughly 2.67 million TEU. Maersk’s fleet, by comparison, stands at 736 ships. MSC’s expansive armada is not limited to traditional container ships.

The tally includes a mix of dedicated container vessels and so-called “container-friendly” multipurpose ships, alongside tonnage operated through affiliated companies such as WEC Lines, Log-In Logística and Medlog. The Admiral Neptune, the vessel that tipped the balance, is currently berthed at the Port of Antwerp, and is expected to join MSC’s Antwerp–Grangemouth service shortly.

The milestone underscores MSC’s relentless growth strategy and further tightens its grip on the top spot in global container shipping — a position it has steadily reinforced in recent years through aggressive fleet expansion and charter activity.
