The Mission to Seafarers (MTS), Lagos, on Sunday celebrated this year’s Sea Sunday with a thanksgiving service at the Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina, Lagos, reaffirming its commitment to the welfare, dignity and spiritual wellbeing of seafarers whose contributions remain vital to global trade and the maritime industry.

Olugbenga Abidoye, members of the executive committee and other senior officials. Sea Sunday, observed annually by the global Mission to Seafarers, provides an opportunity for the Church and the wider maritime community to pray for seafarers and their families while drawing attention to the challenges they face, including long periods away from home, mental health pressures, fatigue and the need for improved welfare and support services.

Speaking at the service, Captain Abidoye, speaking on behalf of Chief Sarumi, reiterated the organisation’s resolve to continue providing practical, emotional and spiritual support to seafarers calling at Nigerian ports. He noted that beyond facilitating welfare services, the Mission remains committed to promoting the wellbeing, safety and dignity of seafarers, who are indispensable to the smooth movement of goods and the growth of the global economy.

Captain Abidoye also commended the resilience and professionalism of seafarers, describing them as the backbone of international shipping and critical partners in the development of Nigeria’s maritime sector and the wider blue economy. He stressed the need for sustained collaboration among government agencies, shipping companies, port operators and welfare organisations to ensure that seafarers receive the care, protection and recognition they deserve.

The service featured prayers for seafarers, the maritime industry and the nation, with reflections on the importance of compassion, service and shared responsibility towards those who spend much of their lives at sea. The celebration also provided an opportunity for fellowship between seafarers and members of the maritime community, reinforcing the Mission to Seafarers’ longstanding commitment to supporting those who work far from home in one of the world’s most demanding professions.
