The battle lines are about to be drawn as 12 maritime heavyweights prepare to unleash their football firepower in the 16th edition of the Ships & Ports Annual Maritime Cup Competition, with defending champions the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) facing a fresh challenge to their crown.

The draws for Maritime Cup 2026 will be held tomorrow Tuesday, 27 October, at the NPA Sports Club, Surulere, Lagos, setting the stage for three weeks of fierce rivalry, bragging rights and high-stakes football among Nigeria’s maritime industry players. Organised by Ships & Ports Communication Company, the competition kicks off on 10 November and runs until 1 December, bringing together public- and private-sector organisations in a tournament that has become the maritime industry’s most anticipated sporting spectacles.

The Customs Service, which lifted the trophy in 2025, will face a formidable field featuring the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Nigerian Ports Economic Regulatory Agency (NPERA), National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Comet Shipping Agencies, Cosco Shipping Lines, Micura Services, ENL Consortium, Apapa Bulk Terminal, LTT Coastal & Marine Services and Greenview Development Nigeria Limited.

With 12 teams chasing glory, the draw could prove decisive, setting up mouth-watering clashes and potentially explosive rivalries long before the first whistle blows. But beyond the battle for silverware, the Maritime Cup has built a reputation as a powerful unifying force in an industry where competition is usually fought over cargoes, contracts and commercial interests.

On the football pitch, executives, regulators, shipping operators and port workers trade boardroom rivalries for team colours, fitness, friendship and sporting pride. Coordinator of the competition, Oluwatosin Rotimi, said the tournament had evolved into far more than an annual football contest, describing it as a platform for strengthening relationships and building a stronger maritime community.

“The Maritime Cup represents the heart and spirit of our industry. Every year, we bring together organisations that may compete fiercely in business but come together on the pitch in the spirit of sportsmanship, friendship and mutual respect. The real victory goes beyond lifting the trophy; it is in the relationships we build, the unity we strengthen and the sense of belonging we create across the maritime sector,” Rotimi said.

She added that the 2026 edition would seek to raise the bar in organisation, participation and competitive intensity, while preserving the camaraderie that has made the tournament a fixture on the industry’s sporting calendar. The competition has a rich history of dramatic encounters.

In 2025, the Nigeria Customs Service crushed long-standing rivals, the Nigerian Ports Authority, popularly known as the Dantsoho Jets, 4–1 in a pulsating final to claim the trophy for a record sixth time. The 2025 edition, held from 4 to 26 November, featured 10 teams divided into two groups, with FIFA-badged referees from the Lagos State Referees Council overseeing matches to uphold fairness and professionalism.

Now, with the field expanded to 12 teams, anticipation is mounting over who will emerge as the Customs Service’s biggest threat and whether the champions can withstand the pressure of another gruelling campaign.
