The Kenya Ports Authority secured a major international environmental accolade at the 2025 International Association of Ports and Harbours Sustainability Awards, claiming the Environmental Care category for its Mangrove Restoration for Ocean Protection and Increased Forest Cover project. The announcement came during the Gala dinner awards ceremony at the IAPH World Ports Conference in Kobe, Japan.
The KPA entry prevailed after a meticulous judging process conducted by IAPH's independent jury of industry experts, supplemented by a public vote campaign organized by the Authority to rally global support. The project outperformed two other finalists selected from a record-breaking pool of 500 global submissions—a benchmark reflecting the growing international focus on port sustainability initiatives.
Reviving Degraded Coastal Ecosystems
The award recognizes KPA's innovative approach to restoring degraded mangrove forests through direct collaboration with communities along Kenya's coastline. The program has delivered measurable ecological gains: expanded mangrove coverage, improved water quality in coastal zones, and a healthier ecosystem that has created ideal conditions for fish breeding. Local fishers have reported notable increases in lobster and prawn populations, directly translating into improved catches and income.
Managing Director Capt. William Ruto accepted the award on behalf of the Authority, describing the recognition as both an honor and a reminder of the institution's custodial responsibility over the environment. "Our Mangrove Restoration for Ocean Protection project is far more than just growing mangroves—it is about survival and livelihoods," he said. "We have witnessed the immense benefits including revived fish stocks and new economic opportunities for our communities, with men and women engaged in sustainable ventures like seaweed and fish farming."
Green Ports Policy as Strategic Framework
The mangrove initiative serves as a foundational pillar of KPA's Green Ports Policy, a strategic framework adopted by the Authority to embed sustainability into port operations. The policy aligns Kenya's maritime sector with international climate commitments and integrates Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance principles throughout KPA's activities. It also reinforces the Authority's dedication to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Under the Green Ports Policy, KPA has outlined targets covering the transition to renewable energy sources, modernization of port infrastructure with green technology, carbon emission reductions through innovative solutions, and active protection of marine and coastal ecosystems. The policy positions port operations as drivers of economic growth without compromising environmental health.
The IAPH World Ports Sustainability Program coordinates future sustainability efforts across ports worldwide and fosters international cooperation with partners throughout the supply chain. KPA's recognition underscores how effective community engagement and government-agency collaboration can advance conservation objectives while supporting sustainable port development.
