The initiative is running from 2026 to 2028 The Kenya Green Building Society (KGBS) is collaborating with the State Department of public works in implementation of of Kenya's National Buildings and Construction Decarbonisation Roadmap. This is the n ational s trategy towards z ero e missions buildings, accelerating the country's transition from climate planning to practical action in the built environment.

In Kenya, the programme will strengthen collaboration between government, industry, and finance to embed sustainability into building standards, mobilise green investment, and deliver climate-resilient infrastructure nationwide. The programme positions Kenya among the first African nations moving from roadmap development to active implementation, creating a potential model for sustainable urban development across the continent.

It reinforces Kenya's leadership in international climate commitments, including the Buildings Breakthrough, Forest and Climate Leaders' Partnership (FCLP), and COP30 implementation priorities. Buildings represent one of Kenya's fastest-growing sources of emissions.

This programme bridges the critical gap between policy ambition, market readiness, and investment mobilisation, addressing one of the biggest challenges in climate action. “ Across our global network, these roadmaps have proven effective in aligning policy, industry and investment, accelerating progress at scale while unlocking the health, economic and resilience benefits of sustainable buildings,” said Cristina Gamboa, CEO, WorldGBC.

Kenya Green Building Society CEO Nasra Nanda said: “T his grant marks a pivotal shift—from championing green building to delivering it. The roadmap translates Kenya’s climate ambition into concrete action across the built environment, integrating standards, finance, and policy at both national and county levels.” Kennedy Matheka, Deputy Director—Buildings Safety and Climate Resilience, State Department for Public Works, Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development said the programme is a key step in the implementation phase.
