The Kenyan government has committed approximately Sh40bn to construct the first three berths of a planned 23-berth deep-sea port at Mombasa. The facility currently handles roughly 2.1 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units annually, serving as the region's principal maritime gateway.
The phased port expansion will progressively increase import capacity for raw materials critical to Kenya's steel, cement, and manufacturing sectors. Construction of the first three berths signals near-term logistics infrastructure investment, with subsequent phases likely to ease congestion for regional trade flows. Steel and cement producers relying on imported scrap, clinker, and coal will see improved cargo throughput as capacity ramps toward the 23-berth target.
