Kazakhstan to add 845 MW of new power capacities in 2027

Kazakh Energy Ministry announced plans to commission 845 MW of new generating capacity in 2027, continuing efforts to ensure reliable electricity supply and build a reserve for the national grid, Qazinform News Agency cites the Ministry’s press service.

Kazakh Energy Ministry announced plans to commission 845 MW of new generating capacity in 2027, continuing efforts to ensure reliable electricity supply and build a reserve for the national grid, Qazinform News Agency cites the Ministry’s press service. In particular, five gas turbine units with a total capacity of 210 MW will be commissioned at the Zhambyl state regional power plant; a 60 MW combined-cycle unit at MAEK LLP; the first stage of the Baskuat Energoprom LLP project, comprising five gas piston units with a capacity of 34.7 MW and a 70 MW combined-cycle unit of Kazakhmys Energy LLP.

Besides, it is planned to implement renewable energy projects up to 570 MW, including a 100 MW solar power plant in Almaty region, three plants totaling 70 MW in Kyzylorda region, two wind power plants in Aktobe region, 100 MW each, another one in Turkistan region and two more totaling 100 MW in Abai region.

New capacities are expected to fully cover national electricity demand by the first quarter of 2027. By year-end, Kazakhstan is projected to reach a surplus of 1.3 billion kWh. In 2026, Kazakhstan expects to commission 2.6 GW of new capacities, including four gas power plants, 10 new renewable energy facilities and expansion of two existing plants.

To note, Kazakhstan boosted renewable energy output by 15% in Q1 2026.
