Over the past six years, the share of electricity generated from renewable energy sources in Kazakhstanhas risen from 2% to 8%, according to the Ministry of Energy, Qazinform News Agency reports. Today, the country operates 172 renewable energy facilities with a combined capacity of more than 3.8 GW.
The increase has been driven by auctions for renewable projects, investment inflows, and the commissioning of new generating capacity. The country has 71 wind and 54 solar power plants, 44 hydropower stations and three biogas plants, the ministry says. By the end of 2025, renewable facilities produced 8.6 billion kWh of electricity, with nine new projects totaling over 500 MW launched during the year.
The sector’s development continues in 2026, with plans to add 10 new facilities (four wind, five solar, and one hydropower plant) with a combined capacity of 245 MW. Officials say this will enable to raise annual renewable energy output to 8.8 billion kWh. In the near term, around 100 projects with a total capacity of 3.6 GW are planned to be implemented, alongside large‑scale renewable initiatives amounting to another 4 GW.
Major international investors, such as TotalEnergies, China Power, Masdar, and China Energy, have already joined the sector. Their participation brings advanced technologies and capital, while also expanding new generating capacity. Earlier, it was reported that Samruk-Energy JSC will deploy AI to forecast power generation at renewable energy facilities, which is expected to increase forecast accuracy to 80% and reduce financial losses from deviations in actual output.
