Six people have died and 34 others remain missing after a boat carrying about 40 farmers and labourers capsized while crossing a river in Malamawar Yan Dutse community, Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State. The accident occurred at about 4.30pm on Sunday, according to the Jigawa State Police Command.
Police spokesperson Shi’isu Adam said a joint search operation involving the police, the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency and local divers was underway to locate those still missing. Local divers resumed the search at daybreak on Monday after suspending operations overnight.
They said efforts would continue until all passengers had been accounted for. The accident has left families awaiting news of their relatives, while residents have called for improved water transport safety, including life jackets, ferries and better road and bridge infrastructure to reduce dependence on river crossings.
Authorities have urged residents to remain calm as the search operation continues.
