Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Mohamed Farid Saleh said on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, that adopting the US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) marks an important step toward enhancing the competitiveness of Egypt's automotive market, supporting the expansion plans of global companies, and attracting further investments.
Farid made the remarks during a visit to General Motors Egypt's manufacturing facility in 6th of October City, where he toured production lines and attended a ceremony announcing the opening of the Egyptian market to US-manufactured vehicles compliant with U.S.
federal safety standards. The minister said the government is continuing efforts to deepen local manufacturing and increase local content in the automotive industry through integrated investment and industrial policies aimed at enhancing the sector's competitiveness.
He added that ongoing economic reforms have contributed to improving the investment climate and strengthening the confidence of international companies in the Egyptian market. The minister noted that Egypt possesses significant advantages that position it as a regional hub for automotive manufacturing, including its strategic location, developed infrastructure, and extensive network of free trade agreements that provide investors with broad export opportunities.
For his part, Steven Haines, US Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Analysis, said the adoption of the federal safety standards would expand access for US vehicles and auto parts to the Egyptian market, provide consumers with more choices, and strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries.
