The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and US energy company Chevron have reported positive results from drilling the Nargis-2 natural gas well in the Mediterranean Sea, with findings confirming the extension of previously discovered gas-bearing formations and identifying an additional gas-bearing layer.
“Drilling operations at the well began in May in cooperation between Chevron, its partners and the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS),” according to a Ministry statement. “The results will support ongoing efforts to assess the Nargis discovery, made in 2022, and accelerate work towards its commercial development as one of Egypt's undeveloped gas discoveries,” the statement said.
The findings confirmed that gas-bearing formations previously identified at the Nargis-1 well extend to Nargis-2, alongside the discovery of an additional gas-bearing layer with promising characteristics. This will help assess the area's gas resources and evaluate potential development opportunities.
The well was drilled to assess the extensions of the Nargis discovery and test deeper geological formations as part of broader efforts to expand exploration activities and maximize the potential of the Mediterranean, including formations characterized by high pressure and high temperatures.
The well reached a final depth of more than 5,000 meters, while evaluation results identified gas-bearing formations with a net thickness of up to 35 meters, a positive indication supporting further technical studies to determine the discovery's overall potential and assess its development prospects, the statement added.
The results are part of the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources' strategy to accelerate the development of undeveloped discoveries, encourage investment partners to intensify exploration activities and convert discovered resources into reserves that can be developed and brought into production, thereby boosting domestic natural gas output.
