Chairman of the Egyptian Drug Authority Ali El-Ghamrawy met, Tuesday, June 9, 2026, with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki and his accompanying delegation during an official visit to Gypto Pharma, one of the largest pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities in Egypt and Africa.
The visit, attended by Minister of Health and Population Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, came as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation between Egypt and Eritrea in pharmaceutical and regulatory fields as well as to support healthcare integration and drug security across Africa.
In a statement on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, Ghamrawy highlighted the strong historical ties between the two countries and said the visit reflects growing confidence in Egypt’s pharmaceutical sector and regulatory system. He also reviewed the achievements of the Egyptian Drug Authority, including its attainment of the World Health Organization’s Maturity Level 3 (ML3) status for the regulation of locally manufactured medicines and vaccines.
During a tour at the facility, Afwerki and his delegation were briefed on advanced production lines and manufacturing technologies, as well as its capabilities in supporting pharmaceutical localization and meeting regional and African market needs. The Eritrean president praised Egypt’s progress in the pharmaceutical industry and the efforts of the Egyptian Drug Authority to enhance regulatory oversight and product quality.
Both sides underscored the importance of expanding cooperation in pharmaceutical manufacturing, technology transfer and technical and regulatory capacity building to support sustainable healthcare development and drug security in Africa.
