Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat on Thursday, September 17, 2026, discussed with Finnish ambassador to Cairo Riikka Eela and a delegation from Finnish company Wärtsilä prospective cooperation, partnership, and investment in renewable energy and smart electricity grids to support the stability of Egypt's unified power grid and reduce carbon emissions.
“The meeting discussed maximizing the use of modern technologies to upgrade the electricity system and increase its capacity to accommodate renewable energy,” according to a statement by the Ministry of Electricity on Thursday. The Minister reviewed the Finnish company's expertise in technologies supporting the green transition, including the design and construction of flexible power generation plants using fast-response turbines, as well as battery energy storage systems to enhance the flexibility of the unified grid as reliance on solar and wind power increases.
Esmat said the two sides also discussed future cooperation in exchanging expertise on High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) electricity interconnection projects, introducing artificial intelligence solutions for grid management and load forecasting, encouraging the localization of electrical equipment manufacturing, and organizing joint training workshops.
Meanwhile, he stressed that work would continue to maximize the contribution of renewable energy to the country's energy mix and harness technology to improve efficiency. The Minister further praised fruitful cooperation between Egypt and Finland in supporting partnerships with the private sector, with the aim of transitioning from conventional power grids to smart grids, which he described as a major step forward for the future of electricity transmission and distribution.
