The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays for the nationwide celebration of Eid ul Adha, one of Islam’s most revered festivals. The announcement was made on Monday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement issued in Abuja and signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani.

According to the statement, the declaration underscores the Federal Government’s recognition of the spiritual importance of the festival to millions of Muslims in Nigeria and across the world. Tunji-Ojo extended the government’s congratulations to Muslim faithful at home and in the diaspora, describing Eid ul Adha as a sacred occasion that embodies sacrifice, obedience to God, and compassion towards humanity.

He called on Nigerians to use the holiday period to offer prayers for the country and reflect on the collective responsibility of building a more peaceful, secure, and prosperous nation. The minister also stressed the need for unity and mutual understanding among citizens, noting that the spirit of Eid ul Adha should inspire brotherhood, harmony, and national cohesion.

“It is in the spirit of brotherhood, shared humanity, and national unity that the Federal Government wishes all Muslims a peaceful, blessed, and joyous celebration,” the statement said.
