Egypt and Uganda plan to deepen agricultural cooperation, expand joint investment and strengthen bilateral food security initiatives, Egypt's agriculture ministry said on Monday, July 27, 2026, after Agriculture Minister Alaa Farouk met his Ugandan counterpart, Frank Tumwebaze, in Cairo.
The meeting, attended by Uganda's State Minister for Animal Industry, Bright Rwamirama, focused on accelerating the implementation of bilateral agreements covering agriculture, livestock, fisheries and veterinary services, the ministry said. The ministers reviewed progress on a jointly operated 500-hectare integrated crop and livestock farm in Uganda and agreed to expand the cultivation of strategic crops, including maize, soybeans, beans, wheat and sunflower.
They also discussed increasing the farm's role in transferring Egyptian expertise in livestock feeding, agricultural mechanization, seed production and silage, the ministry said. The two sides reviewed an agreement under which Egypt supplies around 10 million doses of foot-and-mouth disease vaccine to Uganda each year.
The vaccines are produced through cooperation between Egypt's Veterinary Serum and Vaccine Research Institute and private-sector companies. Both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining vaccine supplies and expanding cooperation in veterinary medicines.
The talks also explored new investment opportunities for private-sector companies from both countries in agriculture and livestock, with both governments pledging support for joint ventures in agricultural processing, animal production and modern irrigation. The ministers discussed opening the Ugandan market to Egyptian poultry products and eggs, citing the expansion of Egypt's poultry industry and its internationally recognized disease-free production facilities under World Organization for Animal Health standards.
They also explored cooperation on establishing and jointly managing integrated fish farms in Uganda, backed by Egyptian technical expertise and training programs for Ugandan aquaculture specialists. Egypt and Uganda have stepped up economic and agricultural cooperation in recent years as Cairo seeks to expand trade and investment across Africa and Nile Basin countries.
In December 2024, the two countries launched the Egypt-Uganda Business Council to promote bilateral trade and investment. The council aims to facilitate partnerships between private-sector companies and expand cooperation in sectors including agriculture, manufacturing, infrastructure, energy and logistics.
