Egypt's Trans Cargo general cargo terminal at Sokhna Port has received its first commercial vessels since beginning operations, marking the start of cargo handling at the new facility as the government pushes ahead with plans to expand the country's port capacity and strengthen its role as a regional logistics hub.
The terminal welcomed the Century Eagle, a bulk carrier arriving from China, and the Transmar Legacy, which sailed from Saudi Arabia's Jeddah Islamic Port, the Ministry of Transport stated on Sunday, July 26, 2026. Earlier, the terminal also received the Chipolbrok Sun, the first vessel to berth after commercial operations began.
The ship delivered the terminal's main 150-ton crane and other operational equipment needed to complete preparations for regular cargo handling. The ministry said the arrival of successive vessels demonstrates the terminal's operational readiness and its capacity to handle general cargo in line with international standards.
It said the facility is expected to increase cargo-handling capacity at Sokhna Port, shorten vessel waiting times, improve maritime and logistics services, and support Egypt's foreign trade and transit cargo business. The Century Eagle is 190 metres long, 32.29 metres wide and has a deadweight of about 52,483 tonnes.
The Transmar Legacy is a 204.39-metre general cargo vessel. The terminal is part of the wider redevelopment of Sokhna Port, a flagship project within the Sokhna-Alexandria integrated logistics corridor, which is intended to improve transport links between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean.
The broader expansion includes new specialized terminals, upgraded berths and navigation basins, and improved rail and road connections as Egypt seeks to position itself as a regional transport, logistics and transit trade hub.
