Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat discussed with Chairman of Income Group Heham Sheta, and his accompanying delegation, mechanisms for securing the energy needed to establish a global data center project in Egypt. The meeting, which took place at the Electricity Ministry’s headquarters in the New Capital, was attended by Executive Chairman of the Egyptian Electric Utility and Consumer Protection Regulatory Agency (EgyptERA) Ali Abdel Fattah.
The meeting discussed developments regarding the project’s work plan and mechanisms for supplying the required electrical power, in addition to ways to maximize Egypt’s strategic geographic location and strengthen its position as a regional hub for energy and data movement linking Africa, Asia and Europe.
It highlighted Egypt’s growing potential in the rapidly expanding global data center industry, supported by the country’s strategic location and major infrastructure projects implemented over recent years, while emphasizing the importance of maximizing the use of renewable energy sources.
The Minister reviewed the operational model of data centers and their reliance on supporting artificial intelligence applications, which require massive computing power to handle the enormous and growing volume of data generated and processed by such technologies.
“The Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy is open to cooperation in this field and has a clear action plan to support localizing the data center industry in line with the state’s vision and strategy for advanced technology localization,” the Minister said.
Esmat pointed to the government’s efforts over recent years to create a supportive investment climate for the private sector and both local and foreign investments, citing achievements in infrastructure development, legislative reforms, guarantees, incentives and specialized training programs that have enhanced Egypt’s attractiveness to investors.
He further highlighted the use of modern technology and digital transformation within the framework of Egypt’s updated national energy strategy, which targets increasing the share of renewable energy to 45 percent of total generated power by 2028. Esmat added that the ministry is working to attract investments in the data center sector through suitable long-term agreements with investors.
