Abu Marawat Gold Mines Company is targeting the start of commercial production in 2026, a move expected to boost Egypt's gold output, attract further mining investments, create direct and indirect job opportunities and support economic and social development plans in the Red Sea and Qena governorates.

In a statement issued on Wednesday July 8,2026, the Egyptian Mineral Resources and Mining Industries Authority (EMRA) said the Abu Marawat project is one of Egypt's most promising gold mining ventures. Located in the Arabian-Nubian Shield in the Eastern Desert, the project is being developed under a strategic partnership between EMRA and Canada's Aton Resources and covers a concession area of more than 57 square kilometers.

The session was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, EMRA, the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency, the Red Sea and Qena governorates, members of parliament, environmental and mining experts and representatives of local communities.

EMRA Chairman Geologist Yasser Ramadan said the Abu Marawat project represents a practical model for the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources' strategy to establish modern mining projects that balance the optimal utilization of mineral resources with environmental protection, thereby increasing production and enhancing the value added to the national economy.

He highlighted the strong support of Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi for the mining sector as a key pillar of Egypt's economic development, affirming EMRA's commitment to providing all necessary support and overcoming challenges to ensure the project's timely implementation in line with the highest technical and environmental standards.

For his part, Abu Marawat Gold Mines Company Chairman Ayman Ibrahim reaffirmed the company's commitment to applying best international practices in sustainable mining, corporate governance and social responsibility, while maintaining the highest standards of environmental protection, occupational health and safety throughout all phases of the project.

The consulting firm Environex presented the findings of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment and the project's Environmental and Social Management Plan, which includes a comprehensive waste management system, 100 percent recycling of process water, the use of advanced environmentally friendly mining technologies and integrated community development and social responsibility programs.
