Electricity Minister Mahmoud Esmat said on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, that peaceful nuclear energy is an inherent right of all states under the Non-Proliferation Treaty, stressing that Egypt’s nuclear program adheres to the highest safety and security standards.
Addressing the IAEA General Conference in Vienna, Esmat said Egypt supports nuclear technology development and the safe deployment of small modular and advanced reactors. He highlighted progress at El Dabaa nuclear power plant, including the installation of reactor pressure vessels for the first two units and continued work on all four units.
Esmat also rejected efforts to make accession to the voluntary Additional Protocol a condition for peaceful nuclear cooperation, and called for a Middle East free of nuclear weapons. He condemned attacks on nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards, describing them as violations of international law.
