Chairman of the Nuclear Power Plants Authority Sherif Helmy is participating in the 70th session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference, being held in Vienna from September 14 to 18, 2026. The Nuclear Power Plants Authority said on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, that Egypt’s participation reflects its active engagement in the IAEA’s work and its follow-up on issues related to the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
The IAEA General Conference is a major international forum bringing together member states to discuss nuclear-related issues, including the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, nuclear science and technology, nuclear safety and security, as well as the agency’s technical cooperation and capacity-building programs.
The 2026 session marks the 70th General Conference since the IAEA was established in 1957. Helmy is also holding a number of meetings with IAEA officials and representatives of specialized international organizations and several countries to discuss issues of mutual interest and review the latest developments in nuclear energy.
The Nuclear Power Plants Authority oversees the implementation of Egypt’s El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant project, one of the country’s key national and strategic energy projects, reflecting Egypt’s efforts to diversify its energy sources and enhance energy security and sustainability.
Egypt’s participation in the conference underscores its keenness to strengthen its presence in specialized international forums and reaffirm its active role in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, further enhancing its standing in the international nuclear community.
