Minister of Labor, Hassan Raddad, met with Director of the International Labour Standards Department at the International Labour Organization (ILO) Corinne Varga, at the organization's headquarters on Friday 5/6/2026. The meeting was attended by several ILO officials and a delegation from Egypt’s Ministry of Labor.
During the meeting, the minister emphasized the political leadership’s commitment to the continued implementation of international labor standards in practice. He said this includes developing labor legislation, fostering a culture of social dialogue, and strengthening trade union freedoms to achieve a balance among the parties involved in the production process while providing a decent and attractive work environment for investment.
Raddad explained that the Egyptian state has adopted a consultative, dialogue-based approach to discussing labor-related issues and legislation through the Supreme Council for Social Consultation. The council, which includes representatives from the government, employers, and workers, plays a pivotal role in discussing labor-related legislation and decisions, with the aim of reaching consensus that takes into account the interests of all parties.
The minister reviewed the new Labor Law as a practical example of Egypt’s commitment to international labor standards. He highlighted provisions that safeguard the rights of both workers and employers and align with evolving labor market trends, including new forms of employment, digital platforms, and remote work.
Minister of Labor, Hassan Raddad also outlined the Ministry of Labor’s efforts to support trade union freedom, emphasizing the state’s respect for the independence of trade unions and its commitment to non-interference in their affairs. He noted the activation of the Trade Union Complaints Committee, which has helped examine complaints and requests and take the necessary measures in accordance with the law and relevant international standards within a framework of genuine and ongoing dialogue.
The minister affirmed that all labor-related legislation and decisions are subject to consultation and discussion with social partners before being enacted, as part of efforts to enhance participation and promote stability in labor relations. Hassan Raddad also reviewed national efforts to combat child labor, highlighting the national plan implemented in cooperation with social partners and the ILO.
He further pointed to the safeguards and provisions included in the new Labor Law that regulate child labor and provide the necessary protections for children in accordance with international conventions. For her part, Corinne Varga commended Egypt’s progress on several labor-related issues, particularly in the areas of freedom of association, social dialogue, and labor law reform.
Varga emphasized the ILO’s appreciation for the Egyptian government’s efforts to promote decent work principles and implement international labor standards. Varga also affirmed the ILO’s readiness to continue providing technical support and cooperation to the Ministry of Labor in the coming period, contributing to labor market development and strengthening the capacities of national institutions.
Both sides agreed on the importance of continued cooperation and coordination in areas including labor law development, compliance with international labor standards, and adapting to the rapid changes taking place in the world of work.
