Egypt and Greece have discussed ways to strengthen their strategic partnership in the energy sector, particularly in liquefied natural gas (LNG) trade and re-export to European markets, during talks in Washington. The discussions took place between Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi and Greek Minister of Environment and Energy Stavros Papastavrou on the sidelines of the East Mediterranean Gas Forum 2026 meetings.
Both sides emphasized the depth of strategic relations between Egypt and Greece, describing them as a successful model of regional cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean, particularly in the energy sector. Badawi expressed appreciation for the progress achieved in Egyptian-Greek energy cooperation in recent years, stressing the importance of moving from planning to implementation to ensure tangible results through practical regional projects that enhance energy security and benefit both countries and the wider region.
The two ministers also highlighted the leading role of Egypt and Greece in advancing the objectives of the East Mediterranean Gas Forum (EMGF), noting that the forum’s updated long-term strategy provides an important opportunity to accelerate regional integration, develop projects, and attract necessary investments.
In the field of natural gas, both sides welcomed progress in expanding cooperation in LNG trade and marketing, stressing the importance of further strengthening collaboration to support energy security. They also underscored the role of the joint company established between Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company and the Greek Copelouzos Group as a cornerstone for regional cooperation and linking Eastern Mediterranean energy markets with Europe.
The two sides agreed to continue cooperation in gas trade, transport and regasification, while leveraging available infrastructure in both countries to support energy supplies to European markets. They also discussed potential joint pilot projects and knowledge exchange in low-carbon technologies to support energy transition efforts and emissions reduction.
Both sides also agreed to study the organization of a specialized Egyptian-Greek energy business forum to enhance direct engagement between companies and explore new investment opportunities, as well as the establishment of a high-level energy working group between the two countries.
