Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam reviewed on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, preparations for the ninth Cairo Water Week, scheduled for October 25–29, under the patronage of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi. The event, themed “Water as a Catalyst for Peace, Shared Prosperity and a Sustainable Planet,” has so far confirmed the participation of 11 ministers, four deputy ministers or heads of delegations, as well as senior representatives of international and regional organizations and research and academic institutions.
The week will feature 114 technical and scientific sessions organized or sponsored by international and regional partners, including the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), UNESCO, the International Water Management Institute, the Islamic Network for Water Resources Development and Management, the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), and the World Water Council.
The European Union and FAO have also joined as co-organizers. The program includes a final preparatory session ahead of the 2026 UN Water Conference, sessions on green water and capacity building in Africa and the Arab region. The week will also host the seventh Arab Water Conference on Oct.
26–27, alongside a meeting of the Arab Ministerial Water Council. For the scientific conference, 122 research abstracts were submitted, with 104 passing the initial evaluation. A further 40 expanded abstracts and 26 full research papers have advanced to the second stage of assessment.
The highest-quality full papers will have an opportunity to be published free of charge in the World Water Policy journal. The event will also feature competitions for young people, researchers and innovators, while 16 exhibition booths have been booked by major Egyptian and international companies and institutions operating in water, infrastructure and energy.
Organizers have upgraded the event’s digital registration platform to support scientific submissions and competitions, while a new mobile app and session attendance system are also being developed.
