Electricity and Renewable Energy Minister Mahmoud Esmat discussed with a delegation from China Southern Power Grid International (CSGI) ways to modernize the national electricity grid and enhance its capacity to integrate growing renewable energy supplies. The talks focused on energy planning, grid studies, smart distribution systems, energy storage technologies and advanced control centers to improve grid stability and support Egypt’s clean energy transition.
During the meeting, Esmat reviewed proposals for enhancing the grid’s resilience amid rising electricity demand and increasing renewable generation. The discussions also covered technical cooperation between the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company and CSGI on grid planning, digital solutions and long-term strategies for expanding transmission capacity.
The Minister said that Egypt is working to ensure the national grid can accommodate a target of 45% renewable and clean energy in the country’s electricity mix within the next two years, highlighting the importance of battery storage systems in maintaining reliable power supplies.
He added that the government is pressing ahead with solar and wind energy projects under a defined timetable and will continue cooperating with international partners, particularly China, to accelerate the transition from conventional to smart electricity grids.
