In Somalia, more than 30 Chinese companies and business leaders recently travelled to Mogadishu for a business forum China is stepping up its commercial engagement across East Africa, expanding beyond traditional infrastructure projects into trade, manufacturing, technology, mobility and finance as it seeks a bigger share of the region's growing consumer and investment market.
The trend is becoming increasingly visible in Kenya and Somalia, two economies with strategic positions along the Indian Ocean and growing links to Chinese businesses. In Somalia, more than 30 Chinese companies and business leaders recently travelled to Mogadishu for a business forum with government officials and local enterprises, with discussions covering investment opportunities in infrastructure, agriculture, fisheries, energy, communications and other sectors.
The engagement was followed by visits to local businesses, including Hayat Market, giving Chinese delegates a closer look at Somalia's consumer market and commercial environment. The Mogadishu activity is part of a wider push by Beijing to deepen economic relationships across African markets as Chinese companies search for new sources of demand and investment opportunities.
Somalia's ambassador to China, Hodan Osman Abdi, said the importance of such engagements lies in turning formal diplomatic relationships into practical commercial partnerships. “The best way to change perceptions is through experience, and the best way to build confidence is through real partnerships.” China's own trade performance underlines the scale of the commercial engine behind that expansion.
Chinese exports jumped 25 per cent year-on-year in August 2026, while high-tech exports rose 42.9 per cent, according to Chinese customs data. The country's trade surplus reached $119.1 billion in the month, with exports of semiconductors, cars and other technology-intensive products helping drive growth.
For East Africa, that growing manufacturing capacity creates an expanding pool of companies looking for markets, distribution networks, industrial partnerships and investment opportunities. Kenya is already one of China's most important commercial partners in the region.
