Minister of Transport Engineer Kamel el Wazir on Saturday, May 9, 2026, witnessed the trial operation of the first phase of the Al Fashn Axis in Beni Suef governorate and the second and third phases of the Dairut Axis in Assiut governorate, with both projects opened to traffic.
The move comes in accordance with directives of President Abdel Fattah el Sisi to the government, represented by the Ministry of Transport, to operate finalized projects to serve people nationwide. The event was attended by Beni Suef Governor Abdullah Abdel Aziz, Assiut Governor Mohamed Alwan, Assistant Transport Minister for Roads and Bridges Hossam el Dein Moustafa, Chairman of the General Authority for Roads and Bridges Mohamed Hassan, and senior officials of the authority.
The Transport Minister said that the first phase of the developmental Fashn Axis extends from the Eastern Desert Road to the Western Agricultural Road over a length of 8.7 kilometers. “The phase includes three bridges; a bridge over the Eastern Desert Road, the Nile Bridge, and a bridge over the Ibrahimiya Canal, the Cairo-Aswan railway line, and the Western Agricultural Road,” the Minister said.
He added that the second phase, currently under implementation, will extend from the Western Agricultural Road to the Western Upper Egypt Desert Road over 18.3 kilometers, bringing the total length of the axis to 27 kilometers. The project includes 23 engineering structures aimed at resolving intersections with secondary roads, canals, and drains, including 21 bridges and two tunnels, among them five main bridges.
Wazir noted that the Fashn Nile Axis is considered one of the most prominent development projects in Upper Egypt and will contribute to facilitating people’s movement, supporting industrial zones, and linking national road networks. He added that the project will also ease the transportation of products from industrial zones in Beni Suef to Red Sea ports for export and help attract new investments.
He further pointed out that the axis will help achieve the highest levels of safety and security through the establishment of a safe road serving residents of the Fashn, Beba, and Samasta districts, while providing an ideal alternative to traditional ferry crossings.
Later in the day, the transport minister headed to Assiut governorate, where he witnessed the trial operation of the second and third phases of the developmental Dairut Axis and their opening to traffic, with a total length of 27.6 kilometers. The axis was implemented by Nile Company for Road Construction, one of the companies affiliated with the Holding Company for Roads, Bridges and Maritime Transport under the Ministry of Transport.
