Minister of Transport Kamel el Wazir witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the financing, design, construction, operation and maintenance of the Borg El Arab dry port and logistics zone project in Borg El Arab City over an area of 133 feddans.
The MoU was signed between the General Authority for Land and Dry Ports and Sky Ports Company by Chairman of the General Authority for Land and Dry Ports Sayed Metwally and Chairman of Sky Ports Tarek Hussein. The signing ceremony was attended by Deputy Transport Minister for Maritime Transport Nehad Shahin, Assistant Minister for Authorities and Companies Ashraf El-Lozy, and Assistant Minister for Maritime Transport Mohamed Fathy.
Wazir said the signing comes within the framework of the Transport Ministry’s plan to implement directives of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to transform Egypt into a regional hub for transport, logistics and transit trade. He added that the MoU is also part of efforts to establish 33 dry ports and logistics zones nationwide, as well as to implement seven integrated logistics corridors linking industrial, agricultural and mining production areas with seaports, while connecting Red Sea ports with Mediterranean ports.
The minister noted that these corridors will also serve new urban communities through a railway network, including diesel and high-speed electric trains, in addition to the main road network, passing through dry ports and logistics zones located along these routes.
The Borg El Arab dry port and logistics zone is considered one of the key components of the Cairo-Alexandria logistics corridor. El-Wazir added that the agreement comes in line with presidential directives to maximize cooperation with both international and local private sectors in all ministry projects.
He pointed out that the project site, including the dry port and logistics center, spans 133 feddans in Borg El Arab City. The minister said the project will contribute to serving the industrial zone in Borg El Arab as well as trade, exports and imports movement.
It will also help reduce congestion of goods and containers at seaports, improve the quality of logistics services, and lower the cost of cargo transportation.
