KTZ Express JSC, a subsidiary of national railway operator NC KTZ JSC, has partnered with China Railway Container Transport Co., Ltd. (CRCT) to launch the first dedicated railway freight corridor connecting the People's Republic of China with the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. The service represents a significant expansion of overland trade connectivity across Central Asia.
The newly established route traverses four countries, originating in China and passing through Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan before reaching its final destination in Afghanistan. Freight trains utilizing this corridor cross the Chinese border at the Khorgos checkpoint, proceed through Kazakhstan's Altynkol station, continue via Uzbekistan's Galaba station, and ultimately arrive at Hairatan station in Afghanistan.
Transit along the full corridor requires 12-15 days, offering a viable alternative to air freight while providing faster delivery than traditional road transportation. The inaugural service on this route launched from Tuanjiecun station in Chongqing, China, and carried 55 containers loaded with telecommunications equipment.
Industry observers note that the opening of this corridor reinforces Kazakhstan's position as a critical transit hub within the broader Eurasian freight network. The country's geographic location between China and markets in Central Asia, Europe, and beyond has made it an increasingly important node in global supply chains.
CRCT serves as the leading container railway transportation operator within China, bringing substantial expertise in block train operations and intermodal logistics to the partnership. The collaboration between the two railway entities aims to streamline customs procedures and operational coordination across multiple jurisdictions to ensure reliable transit times.
