Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly met on Thursday, September 10, 2026, with Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat at the government headquarters in the New Administrative Capital to review current and future projects and plans in the renewable energy sector.
Madbouly said the meeting comes as part of the government’s regular follow-up on clean energy projects in line with the national energy strategy, which aims to raise the share of renewable energy to 45% of the energy mix by 2028. Esmat said the ministry is making intensive efforts to achieve these targets by expanding electricity generation projects based on renewable energy, scaling up energy storage projects using battery technologies, strengthening the necessary infrastructure, and enhancing international cooperation and partnerships in this field.
He noted that the share of clean energy in the energy mix has been increasing, pointing out that solar power represents the largest component of the renewable energy system, while wind power makes a significant contribution to the national grid. Hydropower, meanwhile, remains an essential and stable component of the energy mix.
The minister added that total storage capacity from energy storage technologies currently stands at around 1,100 megawatt-hours (MWh). During the meeting, Esmat reviewed a number of renewable power generation and energy storage battery projects that have been completed, are currently under implementation, or are scheduled to become operational in the coming period, with the aim of supporting the national electricity grid and increasing its capacity.
He also highlighted a number of achievements and technical capacities added to the electricity grid as part of the development plan for the current summer of 2026. The plan aimed to strengthen infrastructure efficiency and succeeded in enhancing grid stability while providing flexible and rapid solutions to deal with emergencies and increases in electricity demand.
The Minister also pointed to a significant improvement in fuel consumption rates this year compared with 2014, reflecting what he described as unprecedented operational efficiency. Esmat also reviewed the implementation status of green hydrogen projects, as well as seawater desalination projects.
He added that a number of other desalination projects are being implemented through existing power plants in cooperation with specialized international partners, with the aim of providing sustainable sources of desalinated water and localizing the technologies and industries associated with these projects.
