The National Bank of Egypt (NBE) allocated around EGP 2 billion to community development initiatives in 2025, expanding investments across healthcare, education, economic empowerment, social protection, environmental sustainability, and housing as part of its strategy to support Egypt Vision 2030 and the Central Bank of Egypt's sustainable development agenda.
The bank said its 2025 community development strategy focused on delivering measurable social impact, particularly in Upper Egypt, by directing resources toward projects that improve access to essential services and enhance quality of life for underserved communities.
Healthcare remained the bank's biggest area of investment, with nearly EGP 862 million allocated in 2025 to support more than 15 hospitals, medical centers, and healthcare units nationwide. Mohamed El-Etreby, CEO of the National Bank of Egypt, said the bank's 2025 community development strategy expanded its reach, particularly across Upper Egypt, through projects spanning healthcare, education, economic empowerment, and social protection.
"These initiatives improve access to essential services for underserved communities while creating a direct and lasting development impact. Healthcare remains our top priority, in line with the Central Bank of Egypt's direction," El-Etreby said. He added that serving the community lies at the heart of the bank's national role.
"Community development is a non-stop responsibility. We remain focused on supporting projects that deliver a tangible and lasting impact on people's lives," he said. Mohamed Awara, Director of Community Development at NBE, said healthcare continued to receive the largest share of the bank's community development spending in 2025.
"The bank allocated nearly EGP 862 million to support more than 15 hospitals, medical centers, and healthcare units across Egypt, strengthening healthcare infrastructure and expanding access to quality medical services," Awara said. The funding supported treatment for around 1,800 children at Children's Cancer Hospital 57357, ECMO services at Cairo University Hospitals benefiting about 180 patients, and the continued development of the National Cancer Institute's northern building, outpatient clinics, isolation units, and bone marrow transplant facilities.
It also financed surgeries, catheterization procedures, and therapeutic endoscopy for 278 patients at Al Nas Hospital. The bank further equipped a 14-room adult intensive care unit at Ahl Masr Hospital for Burns, expected to treat around 330 critically ill patients annually, while also covering treatment costs for approximately 125 burn victims.
It renewed its partnership with Nile of Hope Hospital to fund 1,150 pediatric surgeries and establish an integrated cardiac intensive care unit. Additional healthcare support included providing advanced rehabilitation equipment and treatment programs for 200 children through Wahat Nour El Hayah Association in Sohag, upgrading four operating rooms at Abu El Reesh Japanese Children's Hospital, and supporting the Magdi Yacoub Heart Foundation by funding open-heart surgeries, therapeutic catheterization procedures, and developing adult inpatient facilities and reception areas at the Global Heart Center in Cairo.
