Kazakhstan's national railway operator has announced the launch of a new direct passenger rail service linking Almaty with the city of Balkhash, with operations set to begin on March 1, 2025.
The service, operated by JSC Passenger Transportation, will operate on an alternating-day schedule, offering residents of both cities a more streamlined travel option. The introduction of this direct route eliminates the need for Balkhash passengers to make a connection at Saryshagan station, significantly reducing overall journey time and improving travel convenience.
Each train consist will include one compartment car and one reserved seat car. The compartment car offers seating for up to 36 passengers, while the reserved seat car provides capacity for up to 54 passengers, bringing the total passenger capacity to 180 travelers per service.
Schedule Details
- Balkhash to Almaty: Departure at 07:52 on even days, arrival at 00:58
- Almaty to Balkhash: Departure at 00:10 on odd days, arrival at 15:03
Fares for the new route start at 7,722 tenge. Tickets are available through the official platform at bilet.railways.kz, with sales opening 45 days in advance of each departure to allow passengers adequate time for trip planning.
Railway officials indicated that the new direct connection is expected to support regional tourism development, particularly as the country approaches seasonal holiday periods. The service provides a comfortable alternative for both business and leisure travelers moving between the commercial hub of Almaty and the industrial center of Balkhash.
