Kazakhstan plans to expand cooperation with China’s Hunan Junxin Environmental Protection in waste utilization following the launch of a waste‑to‑energy project in Almaty, Qazinform News Agency reports. Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov met with Dai Daoguo, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hunan Junxin Environmental Protection Co., Ltd, to discuss the progress of the Almaty project worth 145 billion tenge.
The project was launched in May under an investment agreement between the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources and Hunan Junxin Environmental Protection Co., Ltd. According to Dai Daogo, preparations are underway for construction and installation works at the site.
The enterprise, designed to process up to 2,000 tons of waste daily, will generate 60 MW of power, cut annual CO₂ emissions by 200,000 tons, and save about 800,000 cubic meters of landfill space. It is expected to create at least 700 temporary jobs during construction and 120 permanent jobs once operational.
The sides also reviewed prospects for expanding cooperation through similar projects in other regions of Kazakhstan. Following the meeting, the Prime Minister instructed the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources and other state bodies to urgently work with the company to examine all aspects of further collaboration and, within a month, prepare agreements for signing on the construction of waste‑processing plants in several major cities.
Earlier, Qazinform reported that Chinese environmental technology company China Tianying Inc. plans to build waste-to-energy plants in Kazakhstan under a new investment initiative aimed at expanding the country's municipal waste processing capacity and promoting cleaner energy technologies.
